This beautifully illustrated anthology is not just an encyclopedia of yokai, but an attempt to show them in the context of Japanese history and modern Japanese popular culture. The original illustrations alone make it worth a look. The author's website, yokai, drew me to his writings, and has a lot of great content as well.
