I love the central concept of the setting, and the ways in which the mechanics of standing influence politics and culture are are fascinating and incredibly thorough. The world feels fully realized. On the other hand, the narrative feels rushed, and the central characters lack coherent motivations. Dominic is compelling, but even he's a little opaque. Overall I enjoyed the book and would recommend it (enlightenment-era superheroes!), but I'd love to see the author expand it into a real novel.

The book is a brief and thought-provoking exploration of the superpower genre in a universe where fame itself is what grants more power. It features some excellent world-building integrated with action and character development, as well as several ethical dilemmas worth bouncing around your head.
