A very sweet picture book about fairytales, reading, sleeping, and much more cuteness!I spotted this book at the library (so lucky!) and I just had to read it (even though it was WAY too busy at the library, but that is what music + earbuds are for). It looked adorable, and well how can I resist a Caryl Hart book! She writes very sweet books! Plus let's not forget Sarah Warburton, one of my favourite children illustrators! This is about a sweet princess named Sophie, she lives in a cute home wit [...]
A lot squeezed into the little story - bedtimes and fairy tales and reading and understanding others. Ended up a bit on the long side, but still made for a fun story. The rhymes were consistent and smooth, nothing too forced sounding or clunky - always a plus if intending to read aloud. Good clever, spunky heroine too. Don't know if I'd read it for a younger storytime - like I said, a little long - but for a K-1 age group, it might be a good fit. The younger kids might enjoy it as a one-on-one t [...]
I read this charming book with a fun-loving, spunky first grade girl. As a subsitute teacher, I look forward to reading it alongside Jack and the Beanstalk. Wonderful new take with a classic fairy tale.
It started out really cute, with a nice lesson on maybe trying to help someone instead of misunderstanding like in fairy tales (cue college story about Hansel and Gretel and their bad manners.). But for me it pushed a little bit far to ALSO include the importance of reading, etc. Not that that is a bad thing to have in a book. Of course not! I am all about people reading, obviously. But to throw that in with the fairy tale lessons--it felt like an afterthought addendum-y agenda. Still cute. May [...]
In a humorous twist on the classic Jack and the Beanstalk story, Princess Sophie finds it hard to sleep because of the noise from a restless giant who simply cannot stop stomping around. Although she tries to distract herself from the racket by reading several different fairy tales, it doesn't work. Figuring that the giant might need something to eat, she visits him and offers him porridge, a stuffed animal, new bedding, and finally a bedtime story. Finally, he drifts off to sleep, but just as t [...]
Sophie the princess lives with a father who makes porridge and a mother who chops wood. There's a magic bean stalk in her yard, with a very noisy giant who lives at the top. Sophie decides to tame the giant and consults fairy tales to find ideas to pacify him. She wears a dress and a tiara, but clearly she is not your average, every-day princess. Her parents's roles are happily reversed and Sophie herself wears a backpack and pink hiking boots. She tries several ideas to help the giant (who wear [...]
So cute and adorable. A great story. Wonderful weaving of fairy tale elements. Wonderful show of human compassion and the care that children can have for others. Lovely book. What I expect from Candlewick :)
Oh, this is very good! A down-to-earth princess climbs a beanstalk and "defeats" the giant at the top through her knowledge of fairy tales and her empathy! The pictures are adorable and the rhymes and rhythms of the rhyming text are never too weird or clunky.
Cleaver fractured fairy tale with brave princess helping a grumpy giant, who in the end needs to learn to read. All written in rhyme-sometimes rhyming schemes don't read aloud well to me--this one I think is well done.
megan spring reading 2016, children's book, picture book, fairy tale, giants, princesses, bedtime, kindergarten, first grade, second grade
I felt this story was too convoluted and I got bored quickly
Princess Sophie doesn't just conquer the Giant, she tackles stereotypes of all kinds in a pleasing way without being overbearing. She's my kind of princess.
A fun twist on the traditional fairy tales. Beautiful illustrations. Clever story.
This is sweet book. The illustrations are very detailed and beautiful. I loved the story told in rhyme.
A rhyming book more fit for school-aged kids than for preschoolers
A story that goes on a little too long, but picked out by my granddaughter at the library, and she liked the way it ended, thought the girl was nice! All in rhyme.
Enjoyed this tale of a spunky girl who figures out why the giant is unable to sleep. The rhyming text is perfect with the subject. This is a book children who want to hear again and again.
