Teddy Bear was published as L’Ours en peluche in 1960, and translated into English by John Clay. This is the story of Professor Jean Chabot, a successful obstetrician who has risen from poor beginnings to be eminent in his profession. He has a wife and family, a large income, a mistress, and the esteem of his colleagues. Yet somehow it has all turned to dust. He is a stranger to his wife and children, his affair with his secretary is bordering on routine, his wealth seems at the mercy of his b [...]

TEDDY BEAR. (1960). Georges Simenon. ***1/2.This novel was translated from the French, “L’Ours en pecuche,” and tells the story of a doctor, an OB/GYN who has slipped in his duties into a situation where he then took the wrong turn. Simenon had a great respect for doctors, and his treatment of this case shows it. This is again one of his psychological novels – Inspector Maigret does not appear. The focus of it is the mind of the doctor, and what forced him to take the directions he did a [...]

This book is about a doctor sort of having a mid-life crisis. Many of the characters in Simenon's novels are about men in their 50's who are materially successful but feel very disconnected from society; esp their friends and families. This is a theme I liked a lot in Revolutionary Road and the Ripley books. Everything looks peachy on the outside, and all conform to the rules of society; but what one feels on the inside is a totally separate matter.

Equally wierd. Wonder why I had to try again????
