3.5 stars. "Light and Water" is a subtle nuanced story about two men - Englishman Dan Wright and Italian schoolteacher Cesare Eveschi - who meet during a holiday in Venice, the romantic city of light and water. Dan is recovering from the breakup of his four-year relationship with Paul and comes to Venice to recover and regroup. He meets the deeply-closeted Cesare at a pizzeria and they spend the next week together exploring Venice and its glorious sites by day and each other by night. But what [...]
4,5 stars.A wonderful "feels real" story but with the amount of Italian language it`s not an easy read.
Light and Water by M. King is a contemporary out-for- you romance about the intersection of family and staying true to yourself. After splitting with his live-in boyfriend, photographer Dan Wright heads to Venice to lick his wounds…or have a one-night stand lick them for him. But the appeal of those fade faster than the memories from his alcohol-fueled club nights. Enter the quiet, closeted Cesare Eveschi. Dan and Cesare hit it off, but Dan isn’t willing to be Cesare’s secret, so they agre [...]
Well, an interesting read. One I won in a DSP competition and probably wouldn't have picked up on my own.It is both an easy read and a frustrating read. Certainly the first 40% ish set in Venice is almost like an art house film - I could see all the sights filmed in wintery sunlight with soaring instrumentals behind! I did do a google tour of Venice at the same time as lots of information and description and information and description! The story kind of got going once Dan got back to England. No [...]
A Joyfully Jay review. 3.5 starsThis book is beautifully written. It’s full of lush and poetic prose, descriptions so lavish it’s easy to visualize the scenes. It’s got a gorgeous sense of place. But for all it’s amazing writing and wonderful descriptors, it didn’t hold my attention. I wanted to fall into this book and just be absorbed. It had me right on the edge of doing just that. But in the end, I couldn’t let it happen, because there was just so much telling of what was going on [...]
***Way Too Much Flowery Wording***I was ready to quit this book at four percent. I stuck with it, though, and I finally finished it. Because I had an ARC, I was not aware that there was an Italian glossary at the end to explain all the vast amounts of the language included in the book, most of which are not explained in the text (such as “como se dicewhat is word?”). Instead, you have to stop reading, go look up the term or sentence, and then you can start again. This creates a very jarring [...]
Beautiful prose, but the plot and characters take a back seat to the scenery. One of the few books where I remember the descriptions of the locale better than the story line.
Not sure why I just lost interest in this one partway through.
