As a child, and even today, one of my favorite political activist is Malcolm X. I loved Malcolm X because he has a unique story in that he went from being a street hustler who only cared for himself to a Civil Rights activist who cared for all people regardless of their race, religion or culture. But as a child it was hard to wrap my mind around all that Malcolm X stood for and represented due to the complexity of Malcolm's life. In middle school the only Malcolm X book I was able to get my hand [...]

I picked this up on impulse at the library. I was walking past the display of picture books, and was surprised to see a Malcolm X book included on the Black History Month display. I thought in my head, "That's odd," and also, "It's going to be terrible, isn't it" Then I saw that it was written by Walter Dean Myers and thought that I actually trusted him to do a decent job, and he does.At least in my elementary, middle and high school education, Malcolm X was non-existent, possibly even effective [...]

A powerful introduction for young children to the life of Malcolm X and his role as a civil rights leader. The complexity of Malcolm X's life means his contribution is often absent from elementary school classrooms. There is more to take from MLK Jr's life on a superficial level. Malcolm X was jailed for robbing houses whereas MLK Jr was jailed for civil disobedience. Malcolm X's words could be construed as more divisive while MLK Jr's words could be mined for talk of unity. Both men are necessa [...]

This book is intended to explain the ideas of Malcolm X to children. The only difficulty is that his fiery speeches and audacity, his belief in a revolution to come, are hard to make appropriate for small people, so although the art work is wonderful, and the idea of introducing Malcolm as an important Black leader is a good thing for young African-American children to see, his ideas have been watered down to where he is just a generic Civil Rights activist. His ideas were very different from th [...]

Personal Reaction: Super powerful and beautiful biography for a younger age. The book did a great job hitting all of his life and emphasizing the important parts. I absolutely loved the illustrations on every page and that most pages had a separate quote from him somewhere on the page.Purposes:Read Aloud- This would be an excellent book to start off a unit on the civil rights era to show students a more individual and personal look into the time period.Independent Reading- I would assign this bo [...]

Informative and filled with great collage art pictures, this book is a nice brief introduction to the life of Malcolm X. The book also contains a number of direct quotations throughout the text (included in a chronological list/timeline at the end of the book). This book shows the many life changes (character changes) Malcolm X went through during his life; therefore, it might be interesting to compare/contrast him to a comparable fictional protagonists. It might also be beneficial for students [...]

As always, Walter Dean Myers' narrative is descriptive and flows with such power, perfectly setting the tone and feel during this extremely turbulent time in American History. This would be fantastic edition to any classroom or library and a must read with students when covering Civil Rights, or during Black History Month. This resource would best be utilized when read with I've Seen the Promised Land, also by Myer’s, clearly showing two different approaches to the Civil Rights Movement; prese [...]

I admit to being woefully ignorant about the life of Malcolm X, so this was a nice introduction for me. Happy there is a small chronology in back. Includes lots of quotes from Malcolm X that can be used for reports, so useful resource. While I understand the art style is reflective of turbulent time and life of struggle, it doesn't lend for browsing appeal- you have to know that you want to read about Malcolm X or be familiar with author's other work. I imagine most reading for this is teacher d [...]

I'm so glad this book exists. I purchased it to have in my classroom after one of my students came in asking about the Black Panthers (she was reading One Crazy Summer, which is an incredible book). I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea of how to introduce Malcolm X to children, but Walter Dean Myers does a serviceable job of addressing the shifting of X's beliefs as he got older, and how his beliefs fit in amongst other great leaders of the time.

This short picture book gives a well-rounded overview of the life of Malcolm X. This would be a good springboard to further study of this so often misunderstood figure in history. The illustrations by Leonard Jenkins lend a colorful urban feel to the book. Quotes by Malcolm X are highlighted throughout the pages of this book. A timeline at the end of the book gives a chronology of his life, along with quotes that go along with each period of his life.

This simple biography traces the life of Malcome X from childhood to his assassination through simple story telling, quotations and beautiful impressionistic illustrations. I found the book interesting in how it emphasized the influence of his father's ideas about black power, as that part of his life is little explored in other mediums such as the movie. I wish it would have spend more time on his years as member of the Nation of Islam and the break from them.

book has beautiful artwork with great quotes from Malcolm X. A really good introduction for kids to Malcolm X and his beliefs without being too technical or without going into too much detail that would go over a young child's head. A great book to show another side of the civil rights movement, segregation, redemption and inspiration.

This book about Malcolm X is a great way to teach students about an important historical figure from the Civil Rights movement. Teachers need to be careful about teaching Malcolm X to students because he took a violent approach to obtaining Civil Rights. This book is good because it also gives some personal information about Malcolm X from before he was famous.

I read this book for my text set. It was a great source of information about Malcolm X and his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. I love the illustrations.

so awesome
