Review courtesy of All Things Urban FantasyBite sized urban fantasy stories from some of the masters in the genre and a few new rising stars. With a couple exceptions, THE WILD SIDE offers solid writing, a wide variety of paranormal creatures, and tasty glimpses of characters and worlds I already want more of.Here is a mini review of each story:Songs Sung Red by Tanya Huff (25 pages), a Vicki Nelson storyI’ve read the first four Vicki Nelson books, but apparently there is a HUGE development th [...]
The covers of urban fantasy novels often feature spunky heroines and their weapon of choice (fangs, claws, swords and guns) and probably attract the romantic minded reader at the same time they almost repel the more devout sword and sorcery fan. With their modern settings, vampires, werewolves, zombies, witches, angels and a host of other supernatural beings, the books occupy a definite and growing niche, however, and urban fantasy, also known as paranormal romance, has become a wildly popular g [...]
Quite a good anthology, I liked every story except one. I really like that Van Name not only has a bit about the authors at the end of each story, but he also asked them each to write a something about their inspiration for their story, it made for even more interesting reading. Of course I flipped to the end and read that part first each time, I like spoilers in general, plus I thought it was more interesting reading with the author's intentions in mind. I also liked the mix between very experi [...]
Wildly uneven, minimally erotic.
Ten short stories revolving around vampires, shifters, demons in the city.Series:"Songs Sung Red" (Blood Books, 5.5??)The StoriesTanya Huff's "Songs Sung Red" creates a conflict between Vicki Nelson and Mike Celluci when a siren overpowers Vicki's human inclinations.Vicki has been changed and is living with Mike.Gina Massel-Castater's "Careless of the Night" was just too cute. Liz needs to feed her photographic habit and working for Armando gives her access to his studio equipment. A perfect hab [...]
The sub-title to this collection of stories by ten talented authors is "Urban Fantasy with an Erotic Edge" and the fantastic cover art by renowned artist Dan Dos Santos certainly conveys that message. In his introduction Van Name tells us that the name for this anthology comes from Lou Reed's song Take a Walk on the Wild Side. Urban Fantasy is a very popular genre these days and includes urban and modern landscapes of varying sizes and "urban-ness." When Van Name invited his fellow authors to wr [...]
I received The Wild Side anthology from a blog contest that Dana Cameron participated in. I was so happy to have been on twitter with the contest went up and automatically jumped at commenting hoping that I would win the anthology so I could read Fangborn 3. I will read the rest of the Anthology at a later date and get the review up for the whole thing but for now I wanted to review Love Knot.We meet Justine at the beginning of the story and she has a huge problem she knows she can’t take back [...]
"Edge" is definitely the key word in the title - if you are looking for full on erotica, you won't find it here. Since a lot of other reviews seem to have been disappointed by that, I figured I'd get it out of the way first. The one thing these stories have in common is they all involve sex and/or romance. Beyond that, each story is a world unto itself. And there are some very interesting worlds here. Some stories are part of larger series, others are originals.Like all anthologies, the stories w [...]
This collection has several writers in it I have read before so I decided to give it a whirl. For the most part the stories don't seem to be from previous universes of the various writers. The Huff story was my favorite and I have to admit I liked the afterwords by the writers as to why they chose that story and give info if there is more in that setting. The down side is I seemed to be spoiled by some other thematically centric short story collections so this was a bit more of father afield in [...]
This anthology was very uneven for me.I enjoyed Tanya Huff's story including Vicki Nelson and Mike against a foe. Toni L.P. Kelner's story of a witch and a phone-sex incubus was entertaining. Diana Rowland's story of an editor and a demon was amusing. Ticia Drake Isom's "Of Sex and Zombies" was interesting - a world I might not might hearing more about. Mark L. Van Name (also the editor) had a story of Diego Chan, who doesn't know what he is, running off to help a friend. The other five stories r [...]
This was a good collection of stories with sex/sexuality as a centerpiece of each, yet I hesitate to label any of it as solidly in the "erotica" category. For several stories, sex is a backdrop for the real plot, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It means these stories easily stand up on their own.My favorites from this collection were: "Fine Print," "Unawares," "Beauty Is a Witch," and "The Long Dark Night of Diego Chan."
Massively underwhelmed by the first two stories, although I usually enjoy Tanya Huff. The second story, with a silver haired invisible woman, was not just unsexy but actively repellant, in part from the details of plastic surgery to make the heroine attractive at 50 Sorry, but the age was fine, the surgery details were just ?!??!
The stories in this one were mostly pretty good, though a couple seemed awkwardly written to me. It's not all the usual vamps and weres- though there's some of that; several of the authors did a thoughtful and idiosyncratic take on some of the basic urban fantasy cliches.
Eh. The erotica wasn't that interesting (or barely even existed), but I suppose that's what "edge" means.
Short story collection, very inegal in quality.
A good compilation - naughty but very nice stories, some more sexy than others.
A pretty good collection of short fiction. I'fe added a couple of new authors to my list to look for.
Mostly pretty forgettable stuff. Caitlin Kittredge's story held my interest though.
